When class was over and most of the students had filed out, Hunter surprised Ryder and the rest of his friends by walking over and approaching Jake, who was on full guard. Jake had never forgotten the feel of Hunterâs body against his or their heated kisses, which had provided several awkward moments for him since their encounter at Cole Corporation. How close Hunter was standing next to him didnât help, causing Jakeâs heart rate to speed up against his will.
âWh-what do you want?â Jake stuttered, cursing himself for his poorly chosen phrase.
âNothing you can give me,â Hunter said in a low tone that made Jake shudder despite himself.
âKnock it off, you know what I meant,â Jake growled, not liking being pinned in place against his desk.
âI brought something back with me from Macau that might interest you,â Hunter said. âConsider it a peace offering of sorts.â
Curious despite his reservations, Jake prompted, âMeaning?â
âThey are skilled in a way I believe you wouldâshall we say, appreciate,â Hunter explained, his smirk giving Jake his first clue.
âAre you implying what I think you are?â Jake asked, getting his hopes up that heâd be allowed to return to Cole Corporation after they had banned him for his attempted assault on Hunter.
âTomorrow night. Itâs on the house,â Hunter confirmed, surprising Ryder almost as much as Jake.
âThanks?â Jake uncertainly replied.
Smiling in a way that brought back more uncomfortable reminders for Jake of the reason they had banned him in the first place, Hunter flippantly said, âTry not to get yourself banned again.â
As Hunter headed out of the room, Ryder started to follow, but Jake called out for him to stop. âDo you have any idea what heâs talking about?â Jake asked his friend.
âNo more than you,â Ryder replied with a shrug before leaving, happy to see Hunter waiting for him outside. Seeing Hunterâs self-satisfied smugness, Ryder was suspicious that there was more behind his offer. âWhat are you planning?â
âIâm lifting the ban,â Hunter replied with an unconcerned shrug. âThat should satisfy him.â
âWhy do I feel like thereâs more to it than that?â Ryder questioned.
Looking over his shoulder with a grin that made Ryderâs heart beat faster, Hunter answered, âBecause you know me better.â
Grinning, they walked up the stairs together, although Ryder almost stumbled when Hunter added, âBesides, the muttâs surprise is pretty enough to be a girl, so he shouldnât have too many complaints.â
Ryder exclaimed, âHunter! What exactly are youâ¦?â
âYouâll see,â Hunter promised, before rephrasing his response. âThough youâll be otherwise occupied.â
âWill I now?â Ryder asked, arching an eyebrow.
âYes,â Hunter moaned in Ryderâs ear, âyou will be fully occupied.â
Ryder laughed at the playfulness chasing away the lingering shadows in Hunterâs blue eyes. âYouâre horrible!â Ryder protested, even though he couldnât stop laughing.
âYou say that now,â Hunter said, âbut Iâll have you moaning otherwise later.â
âThat sounds like a challenge,â Ryder commented, getting excited about whatever Hunter had planned.
âItâs a fact,â Hunter said with a look of superiority that had Ryder protesting as they entered their next class.
